Use the Holidays to your advantage if you’re planning on selling
If you’re planning to sell your house early next year, take full advantage of the holidays to get ready for the real estate market. Here are three fun ways you can use the next few months to get your house in tip top shape, thereby increasing your likelihood of standing out from the competition.
Thanksgiving Packing Party – Give thanks for all of your blessings this Thanksgiving by inviting friends and family to your house on turkey day. After the meal is finished and the good dishes are all washed, gather everyone around the table to help pack up the good dishes. As well as the serving platters, the fall decorations, and one or two other areas of your house. Make it a contest. Offer prizes for the person who packs the most boxes without breaking anything, the person with the best handwriting (they’ll need to label all the boxes they pack!) and the person with the cheeriest attitude. Of course, the prizes will be things you no longer want or need that you were going to take to the Goodwill anyway. A major jump on your packing and de-cluttering projects!
Holiday Gift Exchange – Whether you celebrate Hanukah, Christmas, Kwanza, or Festivus, think of this as a way to help clear out the collections and clutter. Invite friends and family over for a party. Make it a pot luck, and give each guest a numbered gift ticket for every item they bring. A dessert and a bottle of wine gets two tickets; a casserole, soda, and rolls gets three tickets; and so on. After dinner, reveal all the items that your guests can “buy” with their tickets. Of course, this means you need to round up all the gift-worthy items you no longer want or need and have them ready dusted off and ready to display at the Gift Exchange. For added fun, wrap all of the items and make it a White Elephant exchange. Call out the numbers in order, and the person with that ticket makes the next gift selection. Be extremely clear that all the gift items must leave your house at the end of the Gift Exchange. More de-cluttering accomplished!
Boxing Day – A chiefly British holiday celebrated on December 26. You can make this year’s Boxing Day exactly that. Invite friends and family over to help you pack moving boxes! The personal photos you’ve taken down from the walls, all your summer clothes, camping gear, books, collectables, and photo albums, and whatever you’re not throwing away from the garage. Order pizza and have an ice chest full of soda and water. Have plenty of packing paper, boxes in a variety of sizes, box tape, and marking pens. Assign teams to different rooms in the house and garage. Make it a contest. Whichever room is packed up first, every team member working that room gets a prize. You guessed it. An item you no longer want or need.
Happy New Year! You’re ready to hit the market.
